Engaging M-AD Youths at Jersey Harmony Explosion

Jersey Harmony Explosion 2024 was co-produced by the Montclair and Caldwell Chapters on Saturday, January 27th at James Caldwell High School in West Caldwell, NJ. This year’s event, the fifth since 2018, had nearly 200 middle and high school registrants representing 12 different schools. Through generous personal and organizational donations and grants, including from the Association of International Champions/Harmony Foundation International and the Mid-Atlantic District, the event was and always has been free for all participants. This year’s  world class faculty featured Signature, GQ, Debbie Cleveland and Tony Colosimo.

On Friday the 26th, Signature visited three high schools – Elizabeth HS, West Essex HS and Bloomfield HS – all of which were not participating in the festival. The quartet generously performed, spoke to the students about barbershop and quartetting, taught tags and spoke with students informally.

On Saturday, students rehearsed TTBB, SSAA and SATB combined festival songs and received up close and personal coaching from clinicians for their individual school ensembles. The day also featured a tagging hour where students mingled with those from other schools to create quartets, sing tags and, if they so desired, enter a contest to sing their tag in front of the entire festival.

The day concluded with a free-to-the-public show featuring all of the participating school ensembles, the clinician quartets and the combined festival ensembles directed by Ms. Cleveland and Mr. Colosimo. The students cheered wildly for each other and the clinicians and the appreciative public audience gave a rousing standing ovation at the conclusion of the show.

The Montclair and Caldwell Chapters look forward to spreading the joy of harmony via this event for many years to come and appreciate the support they have received for it from the District and its members!

In Memoriam: Eric Engelhardt

The Philadelphia and Hell’s Kitchen Chapters of the Barbershop Harmony Society invite contributions to our BHS Harmony University scholarship in memory of Eric Engelhardt. Eric was a friend, inspiration, and talented director for both Rittenhouse Sound (Philadelphia) and Gotham (Hell’s Kitchen). His untimely passing in 2023 moved us to create a scholarship to help pass on the joy and dedication he brought to singing together.

Contributions will cover registration and transportation to the annual BHS Harmony University, in 2024 to be held in Denver, CO from July 28-August 4. Please consider making a contribution today! We are accepting donations through our website, which may be accessed via the link in our bio/accessed via this link: rittenhousesound.org/scholarship.

Applications for receiving the scholarship will be opened in April of this year.

Are you looking for ways to serve the Mid-Atlantic District? Look no further! The Standing Ovation Program is back!

The Standing Ovation Program serves as a method for choruses and quartets to obtain an evaluation and improvement recommendations at the conclusion of a chapter show. M-AD is looking for volunteers to become trained Reviewers who will then attend chapter shows, local to their area, and conduct the evaluation. What is being evaluated you ask? Areas such as venue location and ease of parking, ticket pricing, song selection and performance, audience reactions, etc.

To learn more and become a trained Reviewer, contact Garry Warlow, Director of Music and Performance, today at standomad@gmail.com.

Chapters seeking directors!

Are you someone with musical leadership skills looking to hone your directing abilities with a group passionate about singing? Look no further! Rittenhouse Sound, the Harbor City Chorus (Baltimore), and Bryn Mawr Mainliners are M-AD chapters now seeking front line directors.

Rittenhouse Sound

Link: Online Application

Contact: James Lamb

Chapter information:

Founded in 2014, Rittenhouse Sound has continually served as a harmonious haven where dedicated individuals come together to create, inspire, and share the transformative power of music. Our repertoire, ranging from barbershop to contemporary pieces, reflects our commitment to musical excellence and community engagement. The passing of our esteemed previous director, Eric Englehardt, has deeply moved us, reinforcing our collective resolve to honor his legacy by ushering in a vibrant era of continued growth and profound musical expression.

We invite interested candidates to submit their applications, which may include any documents that you wish to include (i.e., a resume, CV, Letters of Recommendation, etc.). This comprehensive approach ensures a process where both the candidates and our Director Search Team explore the potential for a mutually rewarding future.

Harbor City Chorus

Contact: Jonathan Brune

Chapter information:

We are a Men’s Barbershop Chorus in Baltimore, MD, formed in 1944..  We meet on Monday nights at 7:30.  Our philosophy is simply this: all men who like to sing are welcome to join us in harmony.  Be part of a group that provides a fun, friendly, environment.  Our chorus provide musical instruction, plenty of opportunities for quartetting, and chances to perform in the community

Bryn Mawr Mainliners

Contact: Director Search
or
Jeff Porter: 610-202-7676

Chapter information:

The Mainliners Chorus was founded in 1963 as the Bryn Mawr Chapter. After 30 years, Rick Serpico, our
front line musical director, has decided to retire. Backed by a strong music leadership team including Bill
Oppenheim and Doug Pratt as Associate Directors, the Mainliners are looking for a new, energetic front-
line director to take us into the next decade and beyond.
We are a dedicated, smaller, TTBB chorus with big chorus roots, having performed on the Barbershop
Harmony Society’s international stage four times in the last 60 years. A two-time Mid-Atlantic District
chorus champion, we have won the MAD Central Division first place AAA chorus many times in the last
few years. Our membership, while comfortable in competition, really has their hearts in performing for
folks in our community to share our love for men’s a cappella music. Each year we put on both a Spring
Show and a Christmas show. We are the longest standing act that performs at Delaware County’s huge
summer concert festival at Rose Tree Park. In 2023, we had nearly 20 outside performances in our
community, not including performances from our chapter quartets.
Our repertoire spans the decades from traditional barbershop songs, show tunes, pop songs, gospel and
religious numbers, patriotic songs, and more. Our songs are highly recognizable and entertaining.
We rehearse in the western Philadelphia suburbs (called the “mainline” of Philadelphia) at St. Paul’s
Episcopal Church, 1105 E Lincoln Hwy, Exton, PA 19341 every Monday from 7-10pm.
