Sing MAD TAGS on Saturday, Oct 26!

Late last year, a small group of enthusiastic tag singers led by Joe Cerutti, David Breen, Steve White, David Wilt, and Bob Bates met for a joyful afternoon of tag singing. We had so much fun that we decided to organize an annual tag-singing party!

The first one will be on Saturday, October 26th. Check out our Event Page on Facebook and get more info at https://www.madtags.org. Please note that this is not an official M-AD event, but we expect to draw mostly from the region, hence the name.

2024 Call for Hall of Honor Nominations!

The Hall of Honor Committee is requesting nominations of people for consideration for induction into the Mid-Atlantic Hall of Honor for 2024. Receipt of nomination deadline is July 31, 2024.

 PURPOSE OF HALL OF HONOR

The purpose of the Mid-Atlantic District Hall of Honor (HOH) is to give recognition to those individuals who have made exceptional, long-standing, unselfish, dedicated, devoted and uplifting contributions to the District and its members. The effect of this service will also have been of benefit to the Society and the hobby in general. The HOH shall serve to extol the virtues of such participation, responsibility, excellence, and high ideals and, to that end, we are seeking candidates for this esteemed honor. The HOH should be a focus of pride for the District (Please see www.MidAtlanticDistrict.com/HOH to see a list of all District Hall of Honor members).

 QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Induction into the HOH shall be limited to persons, living or dead, whose contributions to the District have spanned not less than ten (10) years. These contributions may have been primarily musical, administrative, or both and they may have occurred at the chapter, division, district, and/or society levels.
  2. Recognition need not be limited to current Society members, but the recognized service shall have been performed while the individual was a member of BHS and the Mid-Atlantic District.

GUIDANCE FOR SUBMITTING NOMINATIONS:

SCOPE OF SERVICE: While you are free to nominate anyone whom you believe merits consideration for this distinction, please be advised that people who are highly contributing members of a chapter, but who have not contributed significantly at the Division, District, or Society levels have, historically, been judged less favorably by the Selection Committee than people who have had a wider impact. In other words, election to the Hall of Honor, the District’s most prestigious award, denotes that the person has made extensive contributions that transcend the chapter level.

 NATURE OF YOUR NOMINATION LETTER:

The Selection Committee is not, in itself, an investigatory entity but rather is involved only with the evaluation of nominees. Therefore, it is essential that you provide enough detail about the activities and contributions of the nominee that will allow the Committee to compare them to other nominees.

PROCEDURE FOR SUBMITTING A NOMINATION:

Following is an outline for information that should be included in the nomination letter. Please use this outline to ensure all relevant information is included! Nominations must be received by July 31, 2023. The Selection Committee will use only the information presented in your nomination letter. Therefore, include complete information about your nominee, regardless of any well-known facts – essentially assume that the nominee is unknown to the committee.

Nominations are to be sent to John Santora at jsantora@mac.com or sent by snail mail to:

John Santora
300 Willow Valley Lakes Dr, A-318
Willow Street, PA 17584

Questions? Call (410) 937-2611. Please include “Hall of Honor Nomination” in the subject line of your email.

Your nomination email should contain:

  • Name of Nominee and Chapter
  • Outline for the nomination to the M-AD Hall of Honor
  • Date of joining the Society (if known)
  • Person submitting the nomination, your chapter and the date of submission
  • Scope of Candidate’s Service and Nature of your nomination letter: (See above “Guidance from the chair”)
  • Include information in each of the following categories (to the extent known):
    • Candidate’s service at the chapter(s) level and dates
    • Candidate’s service at the Division level and dates
    • Candidate’s service at the District level and dates
    • Candidate’s service at the Society level and dates
    • Other forms of service: Please provide a full account of the candidate’s service and/or honors in any other domain in the service of the Barbershop Society.

Deadline July 31, 2024. No nominations received after that date will be considered.

Thank you,

John Santora
Hall of Honor Committee Chair

Chapters Seeking Directors – May 2024

Are you someone with musical leadership skills looking to hone your directing abilities with a group passionate about singing? Look no further! The Harbor City Chorus (Baltimore), Harmony Express Chorus, The North Pennsmen Chorus, and Roof Garden Chorus are M-AD chapters now seeking front line directors.

Harbor City Chorus

Contact: Jonathan Brune

Chapter information:

We are a Men’s Barbershop Chorus in Baltimore, MD, formed in 1944..  We meet on Monday nights at 7:30.  Our philosophy is simply this: all men who like to sing are welcome to join us in harmony.  Be part of a group that provides a fun, friendly, environment.  Our chorus provide musical instruction, plenty of opportunities for quartetting, and chances to perform in the community

Harmony Express Chorus

Contact: Rob Dowling

Chapter information:

Harmony Express. the Germantown, Maryland Chapter of BHS, is a small but lively chorus that meets weekly on Sunday evenings in a convenient Gaithersburg location just blocks from I-270.  Our current Director would like to step back into a singing role, so we are seeking a new Director. The ideal candidate would direct all rehearsals and performances. However, we would consider a rotating schedule, where the Director alternates with our two Assistant Director for rehearsals but the Director assuming overall responsibility for chorus progress.  Our chorus performs about once a month in and around Montgomery County at a variety of venues. We are committed to growing awareness of the barbershop style of singing through free community outreach performances, such as at the County Fair, and through Youth in Harmony events for local high schools.  We are hopeful our new Director will continue our traditions of “fun through excellence” as well as bringing the joy of singing to our community.

North Pennsmen Chorus

Contact: Ig Jakovac 215-393-1940

Chapter information:

The North Pennsmen Chorus is a 30-member, award-winning, men’s ensemble that has been actively singing in the Lansdale, PA area since 1962. We sing four-part a cappella harmonies in the Barbershop Style and are an active chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society.  We are a healthy chapter, both musically and financially, performing locally multiple times per year including two annual shows that are our main fund-raisers. We are multi-year Division Champions and have competed at the Mid-Atlantic District level since the mid-1980’s. Following the retirement of our long-time director, we are seeking someone with vocal and choral experience who is capable of motivating and inspiring our singers. Compensation will be determined based on experience level.

For more about the North Pennsmen Chorus, please visit http://www.northpennsmen.org or contact our Chapter President Ig Jakovac at 215-393-1940

Roof Garden Chorus

Contact: Lee Hoffman

Chapter information:

The Roof Garden Chorus of Somerset PA was established in 1983 and has been well recognized locally through the years. The group now consists of 10-12 gentlemen and we have a strong repertoire from over the years. We meet each Tuesday evening from 7-9pm for rehearsal and have regular gigs and performances throughout the year. We have performed for Valentine and Mother’s day. Throughout the summer singing the National Anthem and baseball games and races. As well as through the winter season with many Christmas caroling engagements. We are in search of a director to help keep us singing for many years to come. Members have been filling in temporarily but a more lasting solution is our biggest goal.

Engaging M-AD Youths at Jersey Harmony Explosion

Jersey Harmony Explosion 2024 was co-produced by the Montclair and Caldwell Chapters on Saturday, January 27th at James Caldwell High School in West Caldwell, NJ. This year’s event, the fifth since 2018, had nearly 200 middle and high school registrants representing 12 different schools. Through generous personal and organizational donations and grants, including from the Association of International Champions/Harmony Foundation International and the Mid-Atlantic District, the event was and always has been free for all participants. This year’s  world class faculty featured Signature, GQ, Debbie Cleveland and Tony Colosimo.

On Friday the 26th, Signature visited three high schools – Elizabeth HS, West Essex HS and Bloomfield HS – all of which were not participating in the festival. The quartet generously performed, spoke to the students about barbershop and quartetting, taught tags and spoke with students informally.

On Saturday, students rehearsed TTBB, SSAA and SATB combined festival songs and received up close and personal coaching from clinicians for their individual school ensembles. The day also featured a tagging hour where students mingled with those from other schools to create quartets, sing tags and, if they so desired, enter a contest to sing their tag in front of the entire festival.

The day concluded with a free-to-the-public show featuring all of the participating school ensembles, the clinician quartets and the combined festival ensembles directed by Ms. Cleveland and Mr. Colosimo. The students cheered wildly for each other and the clinicians and the appreciative public audience gave a rousing standing ovation at the conclusion of the show.

The Montclair and Caldwell Chapters look forward to spreading the joy of harmony via this event for many years to come and appreciate the support they have received for it from the District and its members!

In Memoriam: Eric Engelhardt

The Philadelphia and Hell’s Kitchen Chapters of the Barbershop Harmony Society invite contributions to our BHS Harmony University scholarship in memory of Eric Engelhardt. Eric was a friend, inspiration, and talented director for both Rittenhouse Sound (Philadelphia) and Gotham (Hell’s Kitchen). His untimely passing in 2023 moved us to create a scholarship to help pass on the joy and dedication he brought to singing together.

Contributions will cover registration and transportation to the annual BHS Harmony University, in 2024 to be held in Denver, CO from July 28-August 4. Please consider making a contribution today! We are accepting donations through our website, which may be accessed via the link in our bio/accessed via this link: rittenhousesound.org/scholarship.

Applications for receiving the scholarship will be opened in April of this year.
